What is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome OHSS?

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a potentially serious complication of fertility treatment— in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. OHSS occurs when fertility drugs stimulate the ovaries to produce many egg follicles. Sometimes there is an excessive response to fertility drugs and this causes OHSS. Mild OHSS does not pose great dangers; symptoms include mild abdominal swelling or bloating, abdominal discomfort and nausea.

More complicated cases of OHSS affects about 2% of women taking fertility medication.

Symptoms of a severe case of OHSS extreme thirst and dehydration because so much fluid is building up in the abdomen, passing small amounts of urine which is very dark in color (concentrated), difficulty breathing because of build-up of fluid in the chest and clots in the leg or lungs (thrombosis).
